CARIBBEAN: Election round up

In the first of a series of elections in the English-speaking Caribbean, on 11 December opposition leader John Compton and his United Worker's Party (UWP) won the general elections in St Lucia. The UWP defied opinion polls to claim 11 of the 17 seats in the House of Assembly. The St Lucia Labour Party (SLP) of defeated Prime Minister Kenny Anthony won the other six seats, failing in its bid for a third straight term. Compton, who is 81, came out of retirement to lead the UWP's campaign. He said rising crime, one of the main campaign issues in the elections, would be one of his priorities: it is likely to dominate the agenda across the Caribbean.
